LEDs don’t contain mercury like CFLs, don’t need to warm up for full light output, and are usually fully dimmable, unlike many CFLs. LED’s emit no ultraviolet light to fade colors, and they’re safer than CFLs or incandescent bulbs because they operate at much lower temperatures. Get a Programmable Thermostat—And Use It
At the minimum, most people are asleep for 6-8 hours a day, and many homes sit empty for long periods while their inhabitants are away at work or school. Programmable thermostats save big on heating and cooling costs by letting you lower your furnace or air conditioner settings while you’re away or asleep. Of course they need to be programmed to work best, so read the instructions and set yours up to net the most savings.
Be a Draft-Dodger
Drafts are huge energy-wasters, costing as much as 25% of your heating and cooling energy. Proper insulation is your first line of defense, so make sure your insulation’s R-value is appropriate for your climate. Along Colorado’s Front Range, you need an attic insulation value of R-40 and wall insulation of R-13 or more. Check for infiltration at outlets and switches on exterior walls and leaks around windows and doors. Inexpensive insulators that fit inside cover plates plus weather stripping are commonly found at hardware stores. Sealing drafts and leaks is one of the least expensive ways to cut down on energy use and make your home more comfortable.
Use Energy Efficient Appliances
When replacing appliances, look for the Energy Star® rating. High-efficiency refrigerators and washing machines will net you the most significant savings, but upgrading any of your appliances will add up to considerable savings over the course of a year.
Run Full Loads in Washers and Dryers
About 80% of the cost of running clothes washers and dishwashers comes from heating the water. Dishwashers with internal heaters and load sensors reduce costs by as much as 40%. Do your part by only running dish and clothes washers with full loads. Most clothes come perfectly clean in warm or cold water washes, so save the hot water. Running dryer loads back-to-back retains the heat you’ve already paid for, and clean vents keep warm air moving freely, cutting down on drying time.
