West of Denver and North of I-70 between North and South Table Mountains sits the City of Golden, Colorado. This former gold rush town at the foothills of Colorado's Rocky Mountains was founded in 1859 and became the capital of the federally recognized Colorado Territory in 1862. Then when Colorado became a state in 1876, Denver snagged the title of state capitol and Golden's girls and boys were outraged. Coors set up shop in Golden in 1873 and the renamed Miller-Coors brewery tour attracts
300,000 visitors annually. Golden also is home to the Colorado School of Mines known worldwide for the success of its distinguished graduates in environmental, earth and energy fields. The city's 20,000 residents are served by Jeffco's school district, Golden. Golden is the birthplace of Jolly Rancher candies and during the winter holidays citizens gather in the town center for sleigh rides pulled by Newfoundland dog teams.
