These signals light burners, turn on fans and compressors and may control other things like humidifiers or vent baffles.

Of course, those motors, fans, electrostatic filters and compressors also run on electricity, and newer high-efficiency systems incorporate Heat Recovery Ventilators and Energy Recovery Ventilators to recapture energy that would otherwise be wasted.
